How to Maintain Hair Color After Dyeing: Choose the Right Color Safe Shampoo for Yourself

BY Sally Published: May 6th, 2025

Many people choose not to dye their hair because they are afraid of not being able to take good care of it. However, when you see fashion hair colors and stunning pictures online, your desire to get it will be stronger. In reality, there’s no need to worry. If you can understand the principles of why hair color fades and how to maintain a vibrant shade, you can easily achieve and enjoy your colorful hair. Just spend about 3 minutes and take a look.

How to maintain your beautiful hair color after dyeing?

1. Wait before washing

You should wait at least for 48-72 hours after dyeing. The reason for this is to allow the hair cuticle fully close. And when the color molecules settle down, the premature fading probability will reduce.

2. Use lukewarm water

Stop using hot water to wash your hair now!! Hot water can take away the color pigments and natural oil. So, try to change to lukewarm or cool water when washing. At the same time, it helps to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture.

3. Limit washing frequency

Try to reduce the times that you wash your hair since water would accelerate color fading. Just wash 2-3 times a week, and choose the right shampoo.

4. Protect your hair from heat and UV rays

Heating tools for hair styling and the UV exposure would both break color molecules. Remember to use a heat protectant before using curling iron, wear a hat or use sunshine umbrella when you are under the sunshine.

5. Use color safe shampoo
Color Safe shampoos are specifically designed to refresh and maintain your hair color. Easy to say, it will replenish your hair color by depositing pigments with every wash. They are necessary for those who are looking to extend the life of their dye job.

How to choose a true color safe shampoo?

There are so many different kinds of shampoo that labeled as “color-safe” or “color-depositing”, however, not all of them are effective to your hair color. To make sure you are purchasing a product that truly works, here are some practical tips for you:

1.     Check the pH level

Usually, the healthy hair has a pH level of around 4.5 to 5.5. Therefore, a helpful color safe shampoo should have a pH within this range to help keep the cuticle closed. This way, the color can be locked in. A high pH shampoo (alkaline shampoo) would open your hair cuticle and accelerate the fading speed. Oppositely, a low pH shampoo (acidic shampoo) seals the cuticle, and help to preserve color. So just look for those color safe shampoo that clearly state their pH level on the package to verify, for example, Colorlomo’s ultra color safe shampoo (pH level 5.3).

2.     Avoid those contain sulfates

Sulfate ingredients are common to see in shampoos since they can create rich lather and effectively clean your hair. However, for those who dyed hair, sulfate is the harmful element that strip the hair color and natural oil away, which it will cause the color fade faster and leave you dry & dull hair. Colored hair needs a sulfate-free shampoo that use gentler cleansing ingredients like cocamidopropyl betaine.

3.     Look for shampoo that contains pigments

Do you know what the current issue those color-lasting shampoos without pigment is? They cannot solve the problem of pigment loss. But Colorlomo color safe shampoo is unlike other ordinary color protecting shampoos, it doesnt just reduce fadingit mildly replenishes lost pigments. This ensures vibrant, balanced color that stays fresh for longer, up to 50 washes.

4.     Give up harsh chemicals

Ingredients like alcohol, parabens, and synthetic fragrances will damage the hair cuticle, and lead to dullness. So, remember to avoid them when choosing the shampoo. At the same time, look for those include nourishing elements like argan oil, keratin, or almond oil, which would nourish the hair as well as protect the color.

5.     Consider your hair color and needs

Platinum blonde/Blonde hair: Look for purple shampoos to neutralize brassiness.

Red/pink/orange/warm hair: Choose red or pink shampoos to enhance vibrancy.

Brunette hair: Pick blue or brown shampoos to counteract orange tones.

Pastel or fashion colors: Select shampoos that match your specific shade (e.g., pink, blue, or extreme silver).

Let’s make a quick conclusion, you should choose a shampoo that meet:

Gentle Cleansers: Cocamidopropyl betaine, decyl glucoside.

Moisturizing Agents: Glycerin, panthenol, aloe vera.

Color-Enhancing Pigments: Red, blue, or violet dyes.

pH Balancers: Citric acid, lactic acid.
