Killing the problem of achieving the ideal Silver/Grey hair

Silver Hair Model

Whether on social media or search platforms, data shows that grey and silver hair colors have consistently been a highly sought-after trend. However, achieving the perfect shade of silver is not as simple as it seems. In this blog, we will dive into the world of silver hair color, share styling tips, discuss why gray can be challenging to achieve, and provide essential care advice to keep your silver hair looking flawless.

Silver hair has transcended its association with aging and has become a bold fashion statement. Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner have all rocked silver hues, inspiring countless people to embrace this trend. Silver hair is versatile—it can be icy and cool, warm and smoky, or even pastel-infused for a softer look. It’s a color that works for all skin tones and can be customized to suit your personal style.

Why does the silver you dye become uneven
(possibly leaning green|blue|brown)?

The basic reason for this is—— silver is not a standalone color. It is achieved by combining the three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and then adjusting the brightness and darkness. Since silver is a result of multiple color layers, the base color of your hair acts an important role for the final look. In other words, your final result is determined by both your bleach base color and the product.

Think of that your hair is a blank canvas, the color of your canvas always influences the final result a lot. Here is how different base colors can lead to specific undertones in your silver hair:

24 Shades of Gray - Colorlomo

Green undertones:

When your bleached hair base color has too much yellow and not pure enough, the green hues would appear. Silver is a cool tone while yellow is its complementary color. When yellow mixes with gray, it creates a greenish tint and then leave behind a residual warmth. So at this point you may need to choose a product with a purplish tone to neutralize the yellow in the base color.

Blue undertones:

Usually, silver dye often contains blue or purple pigments in order help to neutralize yellow tones. So, if you over-bleached or your base color is too light, the cool pigments can dominate and resulting in a bluish-grey shade.

Brown undertones:

When your hair base color is not bleached enough, brownish-silver will occur. Darker base colors (especially those with orange or red undertones) can muddy the silver dye, creating a dull, brownish hue instead of a clean silver.

How to achieve the perfect silver hair color for you?

1) Bleach or tone your hair to the right base color

The important foundation of an ideal silver hair is the base color; therefore, you need to create a nearly blank canvas to show up the right shade. For most silver shades, your hair should be lightened to a pale blonde, around level 8-10 on the hair color scale. This ensures that any underlying warmth (yellow or orange) is removed.

2) Choose a silver dye within purple pigments

The right silver hair dye can make all the difference in avoiding unwanted undertones and ensuring long-lasting color. A great silver dye would not only contain grey/silver pigments, but also ensure to balance the unwanted undertones and achieve a long-lasting nice color. Since purple is the complementary color to yellow, which means violet pigment can effectively cancels remaining yellow tones in the hair. This help to prevent the silver from turning green or muddy over time. Also, silver dyes with purple undertones tend to fade more gracefully. Instead of turning brassy or green, your hair will maintain a cooler, more natural-looking silver as the color gradually fades out.
